January's Heroes and Sheroes

This month, we will commemorate the birth (January 15, 1929) and lifetime work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As always, it will be celebrated in grand fashion. We will spend the day hearing his speeches, watching videos about his life, singing freedom songs, and having a freedom march. Please read Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech "I Have A Dream".

We also celebrate the birthday of Mr. Johnnie Wilson; born on January 3, 1919. He was a community leader, activist and Roots neighbor. Mr. Wilson served on the Roots ALC Council of Elders and the Roots Public Charter Board of Trustees. He had been a faithful benefactor to Roots since 1990. Our beloved “Baba Wilson” made his Ancestral transition on January 4, 2006.

We celebrate the birthday of our present day hero, Muhammad Ali, born and named Cassius Marcellus Clay on January 17, 1942. He become a professional boxer in 1960 and won an Olympic gold medal in Rome. In 1964 he changed his name to Mohammed Ali. He is considered the first champion of the entire world and has served as an ambassador of Goodwill for the United States of America.
