BIRTHDAYS OF THE MONTH

On April 5th we commemorate the birthday of Booker Taliaferro Washington, born into slavery in 1856. Washington is most noted for the philosophy of "self-improvement" and for building one of the greatest Black institutions in the world - Tuskegee Institute. Tuskegee Institute became famous as a model of vocational education. Washington died in his home at Tuskegee Institute in November 1915.

I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed. Out of the hard and unusual struggle through which he is compelled to pass, he gets a strength, a confidence, that one misses whose pathway is comparatively smooth by reason of birth and race.”

We also celebrate the birthday of our present day role model Cathy L. Hughes who was born on April 22, 1947.  Ms. Hughes is a prominent Washington area business leader, commentator, radio personality, and founder and CEO of Radio One, Inc. which owns 26 radio stations nationwide, including WOL-AM and WMMJ-FM.  Radio one is now on the NY Stock Exchange.

The success of Roots is demonstrated in several

ways. In 1999, the community asked Dr. Thompson to open another Roots as a charter school. Therefore, Roots Public Charter School was born as a protégé of the Roots Activity Learning Center. RALC alumni have successfully graduated from many of the finest area high schools, historically black colleges and universities, as well as from Harvard, Duke, Princeton, etc. RALC teachers and staff have received National teacher and principal of the year honors, and former students have achieved high on standardized tests and placed well in Spelling Bees and other academic competitions.
